The Single Record of the Year at the ACMs is an award given to the artist, the producer and the record label. It rewards high quality production, and innovative or memorable instrumentation. Conversely, the Song of the Year award rewards the songwriter, who comes up with lyrics and melody.

The five songs nominated for the 2012 ACM Single Record of the Year award couldn't be more fundamentally different from one another. Chris Young brings a traditional voice, while Jason Aldean adds a pop singer to his single. Toby Keith's 'Red Solo Cup' is practically a nursery rhyme for college students and Kenny Chesney continues to rely on mellow beach music. Eli Young Band are also nominated for 'Crazy Girl,' a song that took a long time to figure out, but was worth every moment.

The 2012 ACM Awards are in less that two weeks, so each weekday until the April 1 broadcast Taste of Country will explore the categories, and break down what each artist needs to have happen to win their category. With the exception of two fan-voted upon categories, the winners are decided by members of the Academy. That includes artists, radio station staff and music industry personnel.
