Light, fun and flirty. That's the best way to describe Kelsea Ballerini's self-titled EP, which was released this past November. But as her career grew, so did her music. Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex sat down with the singer to chat about the depth she added to her debut album, The First Time.

"There's a lot of different corners to this album, with the EP it was following the same vain as the single, very just fun, light, flirty and girly," Ballerini explains. "I feel like the rest of the album has more depth and more storytelling."

The full project broaches on subjects ranging from breakups to coping with not fitting in, the 21-year-old shares. She wanted to broaden the horizon on different topics so her audience would be able to find something they could relate to.

"I think there's just something for everybody," Ballerini says. "At least that's what I was hoping for!"

The First Time hit shelves on Tuesday (May 19) and has already produced a hit that landed in the Top 20 of Billboard's Country Airplay chart. Her debut single, "Love Me Like You Mean It," came in at the No. 11 spot this week.

Ballerini has had a busy release week schedule, with an album signing at a Knoxville Walmart on Tuesday, an appearance and performance on The Today Show on Thursday and a Twitter chat with Access Hollywood on Friday. She'll wrap the CMT Next Women of Country tour next Thursday (May 28) in Myrtle Beach. But don't worry — you will have chances to catch her sing cuts off her album all summer long when she performs at fairs and festivals through out the country and on select dates of Lady Antebellum's Wheels Up tour.

Sam Alex is the host of Taste of Country Nights radio, a syndicated night show which airs on more than 60 Townsquare Media Group stations nationwide.
