#LetTheGirlsPlay: Song Suffragettes Perform Kenny Chesney/Uncle Kracker Mashup

Five of Nashville's most up-and-coming female artists pay homage to Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker in this #LetTheGirlsPlay clip.

The Song Suffragettes take on a mashup of Chesney's "When the Sun Goes Down" and Uncle Kracker's "Follow Me" for this good-time summer feel-good performance, featuring Mignon Grabois, Katie Ohh, Kalie Shorr, Sara Haze, Lena Stone and Alex Masters switching off verses and joining in for the choruses.

Song Suffragettes is the brainchild of Todd Cassetty and Helena Capps, who are looking to try to level the playing field for female artists in country music. Every Monday night, five rising female singers take the stage at the Listening Room on 2nd Ave. in Nashville to swap songs, collaborate and support each other, and Taste of Country is joining in by publishing the cover performances weekly, and spotlighting one singer during the first week of each month.

Shorr was our very first featured performer. The 20-year-old arrived in Nashville from Portland, Maine with just enough money to put a deposit on an apartment and cover her first month's expenses, and worked at a hot dog stand to make ends meet when she first came to town.

“I was sitting there in my apartment with like no furniture. I just had pillows on the floor. I didn’t even have a couch because I moved down here with nothing,” she recalls of her first days in Music City.

Shorr is one of the founding members of Song Suffragettes, which have grown to include 70 different performers, all of whom are carefully chosen on their musical merits. Check back with us weekly as we cover more performances from these talented young artists.
