Kristian Bush to Reflect on Indiana Fair Stage Collapse in ‘Walk Tall’ Film

Four years later, Sugarland’s Kristian Bush still thinks about the 2011 Indiana State Fair, when a stage collapse incident took seven lives and seriously injured dozens of others right before the duo were supposed to take the stage.

Now, he’s opening up about the experience in a behind-the-scenes, full-length TV film called Walk Tall: The Journey of Sugarland’s Kristian Bush. The Nash TV Films release is one of several in a series of artist bios Cumulus is producing.

The show will take an in-depth look at the hard times Bush has experienced, including a very private divorce amid the chaos of the state fair tragedy and bandmate Jennifer Nettles’ decision to pursue a solo career. Bush says he is confident the show's tone will represent his story well and avoid sensationalism.

"It's like a good country song,” the singer explains. "I don't mind putting a lot of drama into a song, as long as you do it with respect. Their pitch to me was, 'We're going tell your story, and it's going be, at the end, less about you and more about people themselves looking at their own lives, having gone through bad things and never giving up.' I said, 'If that's what we're doing, then I'll do that all day long.'"

The documentary will mark one of the few times Bush has spoken publicly about what took place on that sad day in 2011. “I wasn’t able to contact anyone who got hurt,” he told Rolling Stone Country in April. “There was nobody to call, nobody to talk to. Legally, no one knew what to do. They said, ‘Look, you’ve got to be quiet.’ So that’s what I did."

Walk Tall — also the title of a song Bush cut for his son — debuts Labor Day weekend, on Sept. 6. Head here to find out where to watch it locally.

Though Bush did pursue a solo career of his own via Streamsound, the one-year deal has recently expired, and the singer is back in the market for a new project. Nettles, who recently signed with Big Machine Label Group, continues to pursue her solo adventure, as well.
