The lyrics to the latest release from Blake Shelton, 'Drink on It,' were hashed out in conversation between songwriters Rodney Clawson, Jesse Alexander and Jon Randall about a year ago.

"Jon Randall and Jesse Alexander are married, and they just had twins, which is really cool," Clawson tells Taste of Country. "This is the first song I wrote with them. I think Jesse came up with the title. We had fun writing this song, just talking and laughing or whatever. We were thinking about the way things really are."

"We did a play on words," Clawson continues. "You see a girl leaving the bar, and you’re like ‘Where are you going?’ And she says, ‘Well, I’ve got work’ or whatever. Normally you’d say, ‘Well come back over here and let’s talk about it.’ Instead of saying that, we’re saying, ‘Well come back over here and let’s drink on it.’

"Hey girl, hey where ya goin’ / Come back and sit back down / You look too good to be heading home so early now / You say you gotta work tomorrow / Got a lot on your mind / Let me buy another round," they wrote in the opening lyrics of the song.

"We use that kind of play on words about sitting there, basically trying to drink your way into taking this girl home," Clawson says with a laugh.

"Girl, I think you and I should just / Drink on it / Put our heads together and think on it / Maybe later on we can sleep on it / But for right now / Girl, we just need to drink on it," they wrote in the lyrics of the 'Drink on It' chorus.

"Everyone knows that Blake loves to drink," Clawson says, grinning. "So Blake loved the song!"
