There's a reason why Adam Wakefield has become a favorite during his run on TV's The Voice. The up-and-coming country star dropped a sensational cover of Vince Gill's classic, "When I Call Your Name," during Part One of the Season 10 finale on Monday night (May 23).

Wakefield is one of four finalists who are left in the competition, competing on Blake Shelton's team for the Season 10 crown. Each of the four remaining singers showcased several songs during Monday night's broadcast, with Wakefield and Shelton first teaming up on for a duet on "The Conversation," originally cut by Hank Williams, Jr. and Waylon Jennings.

Wakefield then turned in an impressive performance of one of his own original songs. "Lonesome, Broken and Blue" is a traditional country song with bluegrass influences, and served as a perfect showcase for all of the different elements that have made the singer one of the frontrunners throughout the tenth season of The Voice, but it was his third performance of the night that really brought the house down.

He chose "When I Call Your Name" as his cover song, and Wakefield managed the very difficult task of taking an iconic song from an iconic vocalist and re-arranging it enough to make it his own. Gill released "When I Call Your Name" in May of 1990 as the third single from his album of the same name, inviting Patty Loveless to join him for a haunting harmony vocal. The song reached No. 2 and has become one of his all-time classics.

Wakefield re-imagined the song for an arrangement driven mainly by piano, and replaced Gill's pure, sweet vocal performance with a gruffer, more rootsy delivery that is somewhat reminiscent of breakout country star Chris Stapleton. Seated behind the piano, he delivered the rangy chorus in a powerful rendition that drew screams from the live studio audience — especially when he modulated to a higher key and sang it again, adding in some particularly soulful vocal runs and embellishments.

The judges were equally impressed.

"Your runs are so impressive to me, they are so accurate and insane," Christina Aguilera told Wakefield. "I love what you do up there. You are so talented."

Wakefield's own coach, Blake Shelton, was swaying in his seat and singing along while his protege performed, and he didn't hold back with his own enthusiasm afterward. "You just blew the roof off with this performance!" Shelton exclaimed.

Wakefield is going head to head with Team Adam’s Laith Al-Saadi, Alisan Porter from Team Christina and Team Pharrell’s Hannah Huston to decide which one will win Season 10 of The Voice. The champion will be revealed in part two of the season finale on Tuesday night (May 24).
