#LetTheGirlsPlay Cover: Alanis Morissette, ‘Ironic’ [Watch]

Five of the most talented females in Nashville gathered on a recent Monday night to pay tribute to one of the most empowering female artists of the last several decades.

The Song Suffragettes are a loose collective of five up-and-coming female singer-songwriters who perform every Monday night at the Listening Room in Nashville. As part of the #LetTheGirlsPlay movement, the live shows were designed as a showcase for these artists to perform their original songs, and the entire roster comes together at the end of each performance to cover a song from another female artist. In the video above, Taylor Noelle, Ashley Leone, Kalie Shorr, Allison Veltz and Gina Venier collaborate on the Alanis Morissette classic, "Ironic."

The song was the third single from Morissette's career-making 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, which won a Grammy and catapulted her to superstardom. The song lends itself naturally to an acoustic arrangement, and the Suffragettes deliver a very strong version of the track in the video above.

LTGP veteran Shorr begins the performance as she so often does, strumming the chords on her acoustic guitar and singing the first part of the first verse in a soft voice that plays against the sly wit of the lyrics. Noelle belts out the first chorus, with Veltz providing an assist on the high harmonies.

Veltz takes the second verse, and again provides harmonies in the chorus as Leone sings lead the second time through. Shorr takes the unusual bridge, handing it off to Venier -- who also provides percussion throughout -- for the closing verse.

The #LetTheGirlsPlay movement launched in Music City as a direct response to the unique challenges female artists and writers experience in country music. Taste of Country jumped on board early, and continues to be a proud supporter.
