After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in business, Lady Antebellum's Dave Haywood took a job in Atlanta doing computer security. He and Charles Kelley were already playing and writing songs together, but jobs in the so-called real world split them up temporarily. Eventually, Kelley moved from Winston-Salem, N.C. to Nashville and convinced his buddy Dave to do the same. They lived in Josh Kelley's house.

Once in Nashville, both men avoided day jobs, choosing instead to pursue music and rack up credit card debt. In 2006, they met Hillary Scott, hoping only to forge a writing bond for their solo careers. However, they quickly realized they'd work best as a trio, and before long they didn't have to worry about getting day jobs ever again.
