Billy Currington Doesn’t Feel Underappreciated
Billy Currington's career has been peppered with hit singles, but some still think he's underappreciated in the genre. The singer disagrees. In a recent chat with Taste of Country Nights, he explains why, plus dishes on how he gets all of those great songs and his other passion.
Currington's latest single, 'Don't It,' is one of many great songs the singer has recorded through his lengthy career, and he jokes that he's able to keep putting out successful singles because he has a secret stash of songs. Currington shares that he also has a "good connection to some great songwriters in Nashville, and of course L.A. and New York."
Adds the singer, "People send me some great songs all the time … I’m always about ‘the song.’ It don’t matter who wrote it."
The single was written by Jaren Johnston of the Cadillac Three, but the trio didn't record it because it isn't really their style. Currington says they "blessed" him with it instead.
As for that whole 'underappreciated' thing?
“I don’t feel like I am [underappreciated], but people tell me a lot that I am," Currington says modestly. "I hear it quite a bit, 'You’re underrated, you’re under-appreciated. Did you piss somebody off?’ or whatever."
"I don’t have an answer for it," adds the 'People Are Crazy' hitmaker. "I think everything just keeps getting better every year, so the time just hasn’t come yet … when they come, it’s going to be a blessing and I’ll know how to handle it and what to say better. Everything’s just going like it should right now."
However, Currington's surfing skills may be undervalued. When asked if he's a better surfer than fellow singer Kip Moore, he can't be sure. “I’ve never seen Kip surf so he might be great," he admits, opening up about his other great passion.
“Surfing takes a while sometimes to learn," Currington says, sharing that he surfs shirtless (you're welcome ladies) since he's a big fan of stand-up paddle board. "I’ve been doing it all my life and I would never consider myself a pro surfer, ‘cause it’s nothing I do all the time. Some of those guys do it all the time and they’re super great."
