Blake Shelton didn't play it safe when sending team members Dia Frampton and Serabee into battle on tonight's episode of 'The Voice.' The newlywed chose the Motown classic 'You Can't Hurry Love' by the Supremes, and from the get-go it was an odd choice, since Frampton's earthy, girl-next-door softness and Serabee's live and loud, preacher's daughter aggression don't mesh on paper, much less in execution.

And that's just how it went. Frampton's breathy voice was downright confectionary, and she exercised taut control over her pipes and went "there" when she needed to. Serabee's voice is unique and dramatic, so watching and listening to the two go at it in the ring was confounding and confusing. Frampton, prim and pretty in her white lace dress, was much more loyal to the song's original structure, while Serabee, in her flowy, hippie-esque attire, was laying the histrionics on a bit too thick. Fellow coach Adam Levine felt that Frampton was intimidated by Serabee's carefree movement on the stage and would not have chosen her.

None of the judges could offer a clear opinion on who they felt was the winner for this battle. Shelton acknowledged the oddity of the pairing, and wisely told Serabee that just because you can sing certain notes doesn't mean you should sing them all the time; he also took notice of the fact that the quiet Frampton did look out of her element. Ultimately, though, Shelton did choose Frampton to move forward on the live shows, as Serabee took a little too much creative and dramatic license with a standard song.

Sometimes soft and stable makes more of a statement than outrageous and all-over-the-place, as Dia Frampton proved to Blake Shelton on 'The Voice' this evening.
