Carrie Underwood on Inequality in Country Music: ‘I Am One of the Lucky Ones’

Carrie Underwood is one of the most recognizable women not just in country music, but on the planet — but she says she’s the exception, not the rule, for the recognition women get in the industry. The “Smoke Break” singer is on the cover of Cosmopolitan this month and spoke on the inequality of men vs. women in country music today.

“When I go to vote for the Country Music Awards, I have to write in names — I can think of, like, three who are really active,” Underwood explains (quote via Billboard). “Women have to work harder to get half the recognition. I am one of the lucky ones.”

The artist just co-hosted the CMA Awards next to Brad Paisley for the eighth consecutive year, taking turns making lighthearted jabs at everything from women in country being called “tomatoes” to the amount of divorces piling up this year. The duo didn’t directly name any names, except Kermit and Miss Piggy, but were sure to say hi to Blake Shelton in the same breath. Underwood says there’s nothing to worry about with her and husband Mike Fisher, though.

“Everyone is getting divorced. They’re dropping like flies! But we are good. It helped that we were both established before we were married. Neither of us could be like, ‘I didn’t know it would be like this!’” she tells Cosmo.

Underwood and Fisher do seem to have a great relationship, posting workout selfies and talking to Ellen DeGeneres about how they trade off baby duties. The couple is busy not only with music and Fisher’s NHL career, but their first child, Isaiah, who was born in February.

Underwood’s Cosmopolitan cover with her full interview hits stands Nov. 10.
