News about Carrie Underwood's role in the upcoming NBC adaptation of the musical 'The Sound of Music' has been swirling for months, and now, we have a premiere date.

On December 5, we'll finally get to see how Underwood plays the role of the iconic Maria Von Trapp on live television.

Mary Martin originated the role of Maria in the Broadway version of 'The Sound of Music,' and Julie Andrews immortalized Maria's character on the big screen in the Oscar-winning film in 1965.

Now, Underwood will have the opportunity to put her own spin on the character Maria. Not one to try to outshine anyone, the 'Two Black Cadillacs' hitmaker has been quick to assert that she would never try to outdo Andrews.

And Andrews has already given the former 'Idol' champion her stamp of approval. The famous actress said that she's comfortable with a new adaptation of 'The Sound of Music,' and that she would love to know Underwood.

NBC's version of 'The Sound of Music,' starring the country singer, will be a three-hour live staging.

And yes, that means Underwood will be singing live -- something at which she is very experienced. Plus, she's had the opportunity to dabble in acting before, thanks to small roles on 'How I Met Your Mother' and in the film 'Soul Surfer.' The live production of the musical will be produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the guys who are responsible for Smash.

Tune in on Dec. 5 to to see Underwood sing some of your favorite show tunes, like 'The Sound of Music,' 'My Favorite Things' and 'Do-Re-Mi.'
