How do you say no to Bono? Carrie Underwood was invited to be a surprise performer during U2’s World AIDS Day event in New York City, and she’ll be there … tonight!

The last-minute invitation makes Underwood one of several high-profile singers who will fill in for Bono as he recovers from injuries sustained in a November bike accident. Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay’s Chris Martin will also donate their time for the Times Square concert. An injury may be keeping the famous U2 singer away, but it hasn’t dulled his enthusiasm.

“The world reached a tipping point in the fight against AIDS,” Bono said in a press release. “A lot of people are calling it the beginning of the end of AIDS. We wouldn’t be at this point without American leadership, people from the left and the right. Today, 13 million people have access to life-saving treatment, up from 300,000 just over ten years ago. Americans don’t know the role they’ve played in this fight. Tonight’s event is to inform them and thank them.”

The event will broadcast via YouTube Monday night (Dec. 1), and Underwood will be doing double duty, also appearing on ‘CMA Country Christmas.’

This marks the second time this fall Underwood has flown to New York City for a good cause. In September she performed at the Global Citizen Festival, an event meant to help fight poverty.

Underwood and husband Mike Fisher are expecting their first baby — a boy — in the spring.
