Condolences go out to the family and friends of Charlie Daniels Band member Joel ‘Taz’ DiGregorio, who was killed in a car accident Wednesday night (October 12) just outside of Nashville. Taz, 67, was on his way to bus call late Wednesday when he wrecked his car along I-40 in Cheatham County. The keyboardist died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the single-car accident.

Taz was the longtime keyboard player and vocalist for the CDB — a member for more than 40 years — and was responsible for co-writing some of the band’s biggest hits, including ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia,’ ‘The Legend of Wooley Swamp’ and ‘Simple Man.’

“I am in shock now,” Daniels said in a statement posted to the band’s website following the news. “Taz was one of my best friends. The Charlie Daniels Band family has lost a great friend and musician. We traveled many miles together and shared so many nights on the road.”

The CDB was set to leave Nashville Wednesday night for two shows this week, including the Cumming County Fair and Festival in Cumming, Ga. on Thursday (Oct. 13), and Saturday (Oct. 15) at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn. Both shows have been canceled due to Taz’s death.

DiGregorio is the second member of the CDB to pass this year. In January, the band’s guitar player, Tommy Crain, died at the age of 59 at his Franklin, Tenn. home.

No funeral arrangements for Taz DiGregorio had been announced by press time.
