Clint Black is taking over Taste of Country this week, and today the country star shares an exclusive brand-new acoustic performance of “Live and Learn” with Taste of Country readers.
The song is the 10th and final track on Black’s debut album, Killin’ Time, and he’s celebrating the 25th anniversary of that watershed project by releasing fresh new video content every day for a week. In the clip above, he reveals he didn’t actually slate the song for Killin’ Time when he wrote it.
“‘Live and Learn’ was a song I’d written, and demoed with [longtime collaborator] Hayden [Nicholas], but I didn’t really intend to put it on the record,” he recalls. “To me it was a fun song I wrote, kind of in the style of Leon Redbone, that New Orleans style, that I just wrote for fun in about 15 minutes. And then I stared at it for a long time, because I thought, ‘Well, it can’t be all right if it only took me 15 minutes,'” he admits with a laugh.
When the head of the label heard the demo for “Live and Learn,” he insisted that it had to be on the album. “But it didn’t change,” Black adds. “So I was happy with it in the long run. It pretty much just flowed out, and stayed that way.”
In the clip above, Black performs the song live in the studio in a solo acoustic arrangement, with just a mic on his guitar and another for his voice. It’s a very different take on the song; the original studio recording featured percussion, bass and fiddle, as well as audio sweetening from swelling pedal steel and harmonica.
Black’s stripped-down version places the emphasis on the song’s clever chord structure — which he reveals he adapted from Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene” — and lyric, as well as Black’s performance, for a slant that’s sure to thrill fans who’ve been hearing it the other way for a quarter of a century now.
