Cole Swindell recently released the lead single from his forthcoming third studio album. "Break Up in the End" is a real change of pace for the singer, and he's sharing the story behind the song exclusively with Taste of Country readers.

"Break Up in the End" is an acoustic guitar-based ballad that's very different from any other single Swindell has released. It's one of the most unguarded vocal performances he's ever given, though he did not write the song. Jon Nite, Chase McGill and Jessie Jo Dillon co-wrote "Break Up in the End," in which the protagonist reflects back on a love that has gone, but left him better than before even if it didn't work out.

"Even if I knew you'd be the one that got away / I'd still go back and get you / Even if I knew you'd be my best and worst mistake / Oh I'd still make it with you / Over and over, again and again / Even though we break up in the end," Swindell sings in the chorus.

In the video above, Swindell confirms that he draws from his own experience to deliver such raw vocal honesty.

"I'm just like you; I've been through hardships, I've been through the breakups," he states.

"It's better to have her to think about and miss her than not have ever had a chance to miss her," Swindell reflects. "I think that's the message in the song, is that it's better to have loved than to not have the chance to."

Swindell has not yet released the details for his upcoming album. He is currently embarked on his first-ever full headlining tour. Swindell's Reason to Drink Tour launched on Feb. 15, and it's set to run through April 7, when it wraps up with a concert in Los Angeles. Chris Janson and Lauren Alaina are joining him on the road as support acts on the tour.
