Former 'American Idol' contestant and country singer Danny Gokey became engaged to girlfriend Leyicet Peralta over the holidays. The couple is hotfooting it to the altar and plans to exchange vows on Jan. 29. But not everything was smooth sailing, especially when it came to the ring.

Turns out Gokey initially selected a sparkler that was too big for his fiancee's finger, and he had to go back to the drawing board.

"Danny originally chose a ring that was too big for Leyicet's finger, so they went on a hunt for a new one together," the singer's rep confirmed to PEOPLE.

Gokey and Peralta also had to stay within a defined budget, since he and his fiancée donate plentifully to Sophia's Heart, a charity that honors the memory of his late wife, Sophia, who died during heart surgery in 2008. Sophia suffered from a congenital condition and required multiple surgeries.

"The couple know they have a lot of responsibility with Sophia's Heart, so they wanted to make sure they spent their money wisely," the rep said.

Even with the financial challenges relating to the ring, the actual popping of the question was quite romantic and flawlessly sweet. Gokey had a car pick Peralta up and transport her to a romantic oceanside dinner in downtown Miami, Fla. They took in the ballet and then visited the site of their first date, where Gokey serenaded her with his rendition of 'You Are So Beautiful,' which her mother sang to her as a baby. Then he asked for her hand in marriage. Obviously, she said yes!

Gokey really pulled out all the stops, as his proposal sounds like something in a romantic comedy. Congratulations again to the couple on the upcoming nuptials.
