David Allan Coe's throaty singing voice and country-rock style have made him a standout for decades, though he hasn't always received the accolades he deserved. After drifting in and out of correctional facilities, Coe got his big break when a record producer at Plantation Records noticed him living in a hearse in front of the Ryman in Nashville. Coe lucked out, signed to the label and his career started to take off.

Although he is known for many hits, 'You Never Even Called Me by My Name' has stood the test of time as one of his most successful country songs. This addition is one of the Top 100 Country Songs of all time because it became Coe's first Top 10 single when he released it in 1975. It is still known as his signature song.
