Dolly Parton visited Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night (Oct. 3) and had the host and audience laughing along as she retold stories about hanging with Willie Nelson and her "comeback."

"I've been around a long time," the country icon admits. "I've been in the business for over 50 years. I never let up, I'm always behind the scenes working. Anytime they say, 'Dolly makes a comeback I think, 'Where'd I go? I thought I was still here!' I just love what I do and I love the people and I think the people feel like they've grown up with me and I'm like a sister or a favorite aunt. I think people want to come along with me and I'm glad they're still with me."

In Los Angeles for her two sold-out concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, Kimmel asked when she started realizing she had a big gay fanbase. Parton said it's been well over three decades now — she started noticing gay fans dressing up like her in the '80s.

"I see so many drag queens out there. I see so many girls that look more like me than I do," she jokes. "I was easy to look like. All you gotta have is a stuffed bra and a cheap wig. That's how I've done it all these years."

It was recently revealed that Parton will receive the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 CMA Awards. A longtime friend of the singer, Parton has known Nelson since she moved to Nashville in 1964.

Parton explains that the two often wrote songs for the same publisher, and even collaborated on one of her songs, admitting that Nelson isn't the easiest to sing with.

"He's so hard to sing with. His phrasing is so different you can't keep up with him," she says, recalling a duet the two worked on called "Here to the Moon and Back."

"Trying to sing with him, I was everywhere. I called him up and said, 'Willie, send me a sack of that grass you're smoking, because I can't follow you. I gotta get where you are. I don't know where you went in my song, so take me there!"

Parton also sang "Outside Your Door" while on the late-night show.
