ToC Encore: Country Music Needs Billy Ray Cyrus

Buck 22 recruited Billy Ray Cyrus to remix ‘Achy Breaky Heart,’ and together, they created a version of the song that those prone to dismissing the 1991 original find even more repulsive. However, there’s a lesson to be learned from what Cyrus has done (or agreed to let happen). Taste of Country writer Billy Dukes argues that country music needs minds like his to stay sharp.

Watch the video to see which other current country stars Dukes describes as revolutionaries — that is, men and women who are truly changing how we think of the format. Buck 22 and Cyrus’ new song and sexy music video likely won’t become a radio hit, but it could spark an idea that leads to country’s next big thing. If nothing else, Dukes says, you have to admire the man for having the courage to put the song out there.
