Garth Brooks Hosts Basketball Camp for Kids in Chicago

Despite being in the midst of a monstrous comeback tour, Garth Brooks is using his spare time to help others. While in Chicago, the iconic singer spent some time hanging with kids as part of his Teammates for Kids Foundation.

Brooks visited Elk Grove High School in Illinois over the weekend to spend time with 150 children for a basketball camp. Brooks’ foundation teamed up with the company ProCamps for the event, where kids from the Boys & Girls Club, Oasis Trailer Park and the Salvation Army all got a chance to work on their b-ball skills.

In addition, kids got a few lessons from University of Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self. The day consisted of basketball drills, help from both athletes and coaches, and time with the ‘Friends in Low Places’ hitmaker.

“Be on a team,” the country legend told the kids, imparting just a bit of the wisdom he’s learned in his 52 years (quote via the Huffington Post). “If you take anything away from this, remember: love one another, and love yourself.”

Although Brooks is a very busy man right now, he knows the importance of helping others — especially children. The icon strives to be a positive influence on them.

“My dad instilled the importance of hard work and good sportsmanship in each of us,” Brooks explains. “That’s what this is all about. I want these kids to be able to learn those same lessons.”

Brooks is aiming to host a kids’ camp in every city he visits on his tour. “Now that we’re back on tour, the parties are back in every city,” he affectionately tells the state’s Daily Herald. “I love these kids.”

Teammates for Kids was co-founded by Troy Aikman with the goal of assisting kids in need in the areas of health, education and inner-city outreach. The group also raises money for pediatric patients. Of course, all of the proceeds go directly to the kids.
