At its core, great country music like George Strait’s is just someone strumming chords and telling the truth, which is something anyone can relate to. Even an electrician in Mongolia.

In a surprising audition for Mongolia’s Got Talent recently, O. Enkh-Erdene stepped up to the mic and blew the judges away with his cover of Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning.” Showing only slight traces of a Mongolian accent, if you couldn’t see him, in some spots you’d almost swear it was Strait himself — or at least a convincing Texan sound-alike.

The judges, including a Mongolian rapper, a professional violinist, a news anchor and a rock bassist, were clearly shocked by what they heard. Audience members — particularly of the female persuasion — grinned and swayed back and forth as O. Enkh-Erdene crooned, and the host and another man excitedly danced along backstage.

Strait’s version was actually a cover as well, as the song was originally recorded and released by Terry Stafford in 1973. “Amarillo by Morning” appeared on Strait’s 1982 record Strait From the Heart and hit No. 4 on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart.

Strait just wrapped the first run of a series of shows in Las Vegas, featuring Kacey Musgraves as his opening act. He recently announced a new run of shows in 2017, performing all his No. 1 hits, this time with opener Cam. Strait also recently released a new box set in November titled Strait Out of the Box: Part 2, featuring 54 classics and two new tunes all in one collection.
