Jake Owen Delivers Merle Haggard Tribute Concert Via Facebook Live [Watch]

Jake Owen offered an impromptu concert for fans from the comfort of his kitchen on Thursday night (April 7). Saddened by the death of Merle Haggard, Owen signed onto Facebook Live to perform a 25-minute set of his favorite songs by the Hag.

“When I heard Mr. Merle Haggard passed away, it was one of the first times in a long time that someone that I really, strongly listened to growing up and throughout my career and someone I enjoyed listening to their voice was gone,” Owen explained. “I sit around the house late at night like this and I tend to play his songs a lot. I loved the ease that he put into his music but also the reality that he had in his music and honesty. I thought tonight I would play you guys a few Merle Haggard songs the best I can.”

Owen revealed he was whispering because his daughter, Pearl, was asleep in his bedroom and he didn’t want to wake her up. And with that he began his short Haggard set with “My Own Kind of Hat” from his kitchen.

“That’s one of my favorite Merle Haggard songs of all time,” he confessed before launching into “Going Where the Lonely Go.”

“I was in the middle of the last song and saw Easton Corbin popped on. Easton, if you’re on, that’s super cool,” he remarked. “I don’t know why you’d be watching me tonight do this. If you were doing this, I’d listen to you, bud. You’re one of the great country singers out there and I’m flattered that you’re watching and I’m flattered that everybody else out there is watching.”

Over 10,000 people tuned into watch Owen’s kitchen set. Additional Haggard songs he played on his acoustic guitar included “It’s Been a Great Afternoon,” “Heaven Was a Drink of Wine” and “I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink.” Fittingly, Owen grabbed a beer from his refrigerator for the song.

“If I’m going to play some Merle Haggard it’s only right to drink some beer,” he said before he grabbed a beer and a chilled mug. “I feel like I could go on forever and ever and play you tons of songs. Golly, so many songs I loved growing up.”

His set came to an abrupt close when his service died, but fans can rest easy knowing that Owen will likely pop up on social media again very soon.
