Everyone knows that Jo Dee Messina is one of those fiercely independent, tell-it-like-it-is country music stars. But it's hard to believe that Messina has never had the chance to make an album the way she really wants it to be. Now, after 18 years in the industry, Messina hopes to finally have that chance.

While Messina is grateful for having big label support for years, she's turning to Kickstarter to raise funds for a new album that she can record her way. On May 24 the sassy country star launched a campaign called 'My Time. Our Music' to solicit fans' help.

"Now that I have the ability to make any record I want, I’d like to take a different route,” Messina says in a statement. “I want to give the public a chance to be heard. This time I want to make a record with you, in addition to making one for you. Kickstarter is the perfect platform. It allows me to change the way things have traditionally been done in my career for years. It’s totally exciting!"

Messina has set a goal of raising $100,000 to help fund the new full-length album. That will cover studio time, musicians, engineers, producers, assistants, recording, mixing . . . you get the picture. It takes a village to make a great album! In order to succeed, the financial goal must be met within a 30-day period.

Since fans will have to be on board to make the album happen, Messina is giving them the opportunity to choose some of the songs that she will record. The 'My Give a Damn's Busted' hitmaker is gathering feedback from fans at her shows, on Twitter and Facebook, and through StageIt reviews to learn which songs fans love the most. Her followers will also have the opportunity to vote on album artwork and even submit original pieces for consideration.

“This album is truly for you, the people who appreciate the creative process, as well as my amazing fans,” Messina adds. “There’s no question, I wouldn’t be where I am today without your love and support. You’ve been with me since the beginning, and I’m in need of your support now more than ever. This album is a fresh start for me, and I want us to go on this exciting journey together.”
