Josh Thompson has put the finishing touches on his sophomore album for Columbia Nashville. The new album not only shows growth in Thompson -- who released his debut album, 'Way Out Here,' in February last year -- as a singer, but also as a songwriter and entertainer.

"I feel great about the songs on this new album," Thompson reveals to Taste of Country. "We actually recorded more than we’re going to put on the record. When we first went into the studio, we did eight songs. It was about three months before we got back to the studio, so I was doing a lot of writing in between that time. I had fallen in love with some new things, so we recorded another seven songs. I think we’re going to wait and get them all mixed and listen to them and decide which ones stay and which ones go. I feel real good about the songs."

"I tried to put a good mix of tempo on there," he continues. "Something to drive to and something that also makes the live show a little more jiving. A lot of what I decide goes on the record has to do with the live show. There are also some great, deep songs on there, which I think is very important. It’s going to be a trick to decide which ones go and which ones stay, but I think the end product is going to be great. I’m really proud of it so far."

The album's first single will likely impact country radio by the beginning of September, but those lucky enough to catch Thompson's live show are already getting a sneak peak at a handful of the new tunes. "We’re getting some good feedback on a song called 'Rust,' a song called 'Same Ol' Plain Ol' Me,' and a song called 'Comin' Around,'" says Thompson. "We’ve been playing them for quite some time. They just really work well in the show. I’m excited about having another record out. It’s hard to do 90-minute shows with one record … trying to figure out what covers should we do. So it will good for us to be able to do 90 minutes of all original material."

Thompson is anticipating the new album to hit stores after the first of the year. To keep up on all the latest with Thompson and the new music, visit his website here.
