Kacey Musgraves Sings Patsy Cline, Gets Emotional With Robin Roberts [Watch]

Kacey Musgraves demonstrated both her vocal chops and her softer side in an interview with Robin Roberts before the 2014 CMA Awards.

Musgraves was just one of the country stars who took part in ’15 Songs That Changed Country Music,’ which featured contemporary performers paying tribute to some of the most influential songs in the genre’s history.

George Jones‘ ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today,’ Dolly Parton‘s ‘I Will Always Love You’ and Hank Williams‘ ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry’ all made the cut, along with more recent songs from Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift. Topping the list was Patsy Cline‘s signature song, ‘Crazy,’ written by a then-little-known songwriter named Willie Nelson.

Musgraves performed the song, displaying a very different side of her voice than she generally employs in her own music. “The song ‘Crazy’ is so relatable, undeniably it’s a classic country song,” she tells Roberts. “I think 50 years from now, we’re still going to be talking about it.”

The singer also got emotional when Roberts showed her a clip of the first time Musgraves heard her debut single ‘Merry Go ‘Round’ on the radio. Seeing her younger self — only two years ago, but far removed from the success that she has since experienced — react, she teared up all over again.

“That was the mark of a full circle moment,” she shares. “A lot of ideas and hard work — not even just my hard work, but everyone’s hard work coming together. There’s so many brilliant songs and songwriters out there that never get to see the light of day … not only that, but people who have been changed by it. That is why I do what I do.”

Take a look at that clip below.

Musgraves won Song of the Year at the 2014 CMA Awards for her third single, ‘Follow Your Arrow,’ which celebrates individuality.
