It was just a normal day of auditions for American Idol judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr., when in walks a face they never expected to see: Kanye West.

The judges were shocked, especially Urban, who seemed at a loss for words. West didn’t second-guess himself (does he ever?) and went ahead confidently with his audition, singing a bit from “Gold Digger,” which, fans will remember, has a gratuitous Lopez reference. No one ever said sucking up to the judges doesn’t pay off once and a while.

The superstar hip-hop icon breezed right on through the audition, strolling out the doors with a coveted golden ticket to Hollywood. Wife Kim Kardashian greeted him outside the audition room with host Ryan Seacrest to congratulate him.

It certainly turned a typical audition experience into a memorable one for the judges on their last season, though Urban has said he thinks the show may come back in some capacity in the future.

“I’ve been hearing more and more that there’s so much love out there for Idol that it may continue on in some form somewhere else. I don’t know. I just know there’s so much talk about it maybe being the final season where it is. And, at some point coming back to life again, so who knows,” he told Country Countdown USA.

The artist says if Idol did make a return, he definitely wouldn’t be opposed to continuing his role.

“I’d be open to it because it’s a fun part of my year,” Urban, who began as a judge in 2012, admits. “My primary love professionally is writing songs, making records and touring. That’s what I love more than anything. But Idol fits in beautifully to that, so I certainly enjoy doing it.”

Urban has been busy with the success of his latest single “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” as his 19th No. 1 hit, closely following his 18th No. 1 “Raise ‘Em Up,” a duet with Eric Church. No official word on details for the upcoming album, but Urban says he is working on it now, and a new single from that album is expected soon.
