Keith Urban’s Birthday Wish to Nicole Kidman Caps 2015 Country Jam Set

Keith Urban closed his 2015 Country Jam set with a personal message to wife Nicole Kidman. After a sizzling 90-plus-minute show that included many of his biggest hits, he returned for an encore that began with a festival-wide singalong of “Happy Birthday.” Kidman turns 48 on June 20.

The “John Deere, John Cougar, John 3:16” singer opened with “Put You in a Song” and wasted no time getting to his first extended guitar solo. Fast-paced songs like “You Gonna Fly” and “Somewhere in My Car” followed before he slowed things down with “Without You,” though the rowdy Country Jam crowd didn’t complain.

Urban didn’t chat much between songs in Grand Junction, Colo. He also didn’t stray from his hits, aside from “Happy Birthday” and “Good Thing,” a deep cut from Fuse. “Sweet Thing” and “Cop Car” were other early highlights. So was “Making Memories of Us,” which Urban performed acoustic.

Fans got involved during songs like “Little Bit of Everything.” It was a big singalong in the mountains of Grand Junction. Later, Urban walked into the crowd for “You Look Good in My Shirt,” working his way to the lawn while singing his 2008 hit on a pseudo crowd stage. It lasted a few minutes before he returned to the big stage, where he immediately launched into a big riff on electric guitar.

The set was more music-based, instead of theatrics or smoke show. Urban is a showman without being showy. The songs — like “Stupid Boy” late in the show, and “Cop Car” before that — drove the excitement. It was a more even-keel set that lived mostly in his later hits and hinted at what’s to come. Even though Urban said earlier that he’s a ways away from being finished on his new studio album, he’s clearly still looking forward.

Day 2 of 2015 Country Jam also included sets by Frankie Ballard, Thompson Square and Western Underground. Saturday and Sunday lineups include Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Billy Currington and Kacey Musgraves.
