Keith Urban’s Father Dies After Long Battle With Cancer
Keith Urban‘s father, Robert Urban, passed away Saturday night (Dec. 5) following a lengthy battle with cancer.
In a statement from his publicist, the country star shares his appreciation for the “outpouring of love and support” he has received during this very difficult time.
“I’ve been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support that Nic and I, and our family, have received since my Dad’s passing on Saturday night,” Keith Urban writes. “His long battle with cancer is now over and he is finally at peace. My Dad’s love of country music and America set me on my life’s journey, and shaped so much of who I am today. Thank you to everyone who has kept us all in your thoughts and prayers.”
The news comes just days after the singer revealed that his father had entered hospice care. Urban told The Tennessean about his father’s ongoing battle while at the unveiling of his exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
“He’s probably only got a few weeks, if that,” Urban explained to media. “I’ve just been dealing with that the last couple of days. This has all come at a very strange time, where it’s typical of a career that has extreme highs and extreme lows, all often at the exact same time. So [the exhibit] is bittersweet a little bit because [my dad] is the catalyst for all of this. My dad is the catalyst for me living in America.”
The singer’s So Far exhibit includes costumes made by his father, which Urban wore during performances when he was much younger.
“My dad particularly always thought it was important that I dressed like a performer, so a lot of those outfits were actually made by him, with the help of my mom, but particularly my dad,” Urban says, adding, “He just really thought I should dress well and look like a performer.”
Last year, Urban’s wife, Nicole Kidman, dealt with the death of her father and in an interview said how Urban “literally carried” her after her difficult loss.
