Kelly Clarkson is opening up about her shocking cancer scare she had in 2006.

Just hours before Clarkson was set to hit the stage at the 2006 Grammy Awards to perform her hit “Because of You,” the singer received some startling news: Her doctor told her she may have cancer. “I was told that morning that I had cancerous results for something,” Clarkson shares on Billboard’s Pop Shop Podcast, talking openly about the experience for the first time. “Here’s the horrible part: I went the whole day crying…I was like, ‘Wow, I’m so young.’ I was just completely freaking out.”

In spite of the frightening news she received on music’s biggest day, Clarkson picked up her first two Grammy Awards that night in the categories of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her chart-topping hit “Since U Been Gone” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Breakaway. “When I won, I thought, ‘Oh my God! This is God giving me like one cool thing before something horrible happens,’” she continues. “It was very much a roller coaster ride, that day, for me.” But thankfully, it was just a false alarm. The doctor informed her the following day that they had accidentally mixed up the test results and she was, in fact, cancer-free.

Clarkson is up for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards for the American Idol version of her chart-topping song “Piece by Piece,” which she sang in 2016 on the musical competition show that launched her into fame, delivering an emotional performance that left judge Keith Urban in tears.
