Kelly Clarkson Says She Was ‘Blackmailed’ Into Working With Dr. Luke

In light of the drama surrounding producer Dr. Luke and pop star Kesha, Kelly Clarkson began a discussion of her own, and she doesn’t have nice things to say, either.

The pop-country singer started her comments via Twitter on Feb. 19 with a vague message about biting her tongue:

Though she didn’t go into detail online, Clarkson later put more words to the Dr. Luke subject in an interview with Australia’s KIIS 106.5.

“A lot of artists that have worked with him don’t work with him anymore for pretty good, solid reasons,” Clarkson says. “He’s not a good person to me. We’ve clashed. I can’t really say anything other than that.”

Clarkson says she can’t comment on Kesha’s particular situation because she was not directly involved, but she does concede that it doesn’t necessarily sound out of character for the producer.

“Unfortunately, that poor of character — I mean so many artists don’t like you, don’t like working with you — that’s not normal,” Clarkson tells People.

She also says that though she has not been in this type of situation with a producer before, she realizes it does happen in the music business, especially for females.

“I’ve heard a lot of girls have had similar situations,” she says. “If it’s true, I can’t imagine working with somebody like that.”

Clarkson worked with Dr. Luke on hits like “Since U Been Gone” and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” but even so, she says she only did it because her label forced her hand.

“Even the last time I worked with him I only worked with him because literally I got blackmailed by my label,” she explains. “They were like, ‘We will not put your album out if you don’t do this.’”

That was when Clarkson found out what he was like, which she calls “difficult to work with” and “kind of demeaning.” She adds that Dr. Luke “lied a lot” and that she “[ran] into a couple really bad situations” with him.

Clarkson recently returned to her home stage of American Idol and gave an emotional performance of her song “Piece by Piece,” a tribute to her husband in light of her father’s abandonment when she was a child. The singer is now pregnant with her second child, a boy, and says she can’t wait to meet him, especially considering her rough pregnancy. She has also written a children’s book starring her daughter River Rose, titled River Rose and the Magical Lullaby, inspired by her travels with her little girl.
