Powerhouse country vocalist Kree Harrison performed Susan Tedeschi's blues-rock song 'It Hurt So Bad' on 'American Idol' on Wednesday night (April 24), earning a strong response from the audience but a mixed reaction from the judges.

The song was part of the night's theme that allowed each contestant to choose a song of their own. Harrison said she chose the tune because she felt it would allow her to showcase her blues side and let her perform in a more uninhibited manner than she has in weeks past. She delivered the song with a masterful blend of gritty power and restrained phrasing, employing a lot of dynamic contrast.

"I could tell you were right there in your element," Randy Jackson said, but added that he was expecting something different from her this week. Mariah Carey chimed in that she enjoyed Harrison's performance and connection with the studio audience.

Keith Urban -- who has been a huge supporter of Harrison's -- said she was a great singer, but he felt that at this late stage of the competition, "You've got to leave nothing on the table -- you've got to make my heart break."

Nicki Minaj was more blunt. "That performance is not going to give you what you need for next week," she said. "That is not a Top 4-worthy performance."

Harrison will learn if she will progress another week on the results show Thursday night (April 25).
