Loretta Lynn Takes Fan Requests During SXSW 2016 Performance

Loretta Lynn may be 83 years old, but the Coal Miner’s Daughter shows no signs of slowing down. Thursday night (March 18), she played a spirited set at the iconic Austin, Texas venue Stubb’s during the South by Southwest Music Festival, where she took song requests from the crowd.

According to the Austin 360, the legendary artist — dressed in a floor length red sequin gown — played the role of a jukebox. Whatever the crowd wanted to hear, she would play.

“Well, whatever you wanna hear, holler it out,” Lynn said during her set. “If I don’t know it, you can come up here and sing it yourself.”

Austin 360 notes that midway through the set, as she sat down on a suitcase and sipped some water, one audience member yelled out “Fist City.”

“Fist City?” Lynn asked. “OK.” Then the band played “Fist City.”

Lynn’s set included her signature song “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” as well as “She’s Got You” and “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven,” which the band began by playing the wrong song.

“You better listen to me, or y’all gonna be playing for someone else next week,” she joked.

Lynn was just one of a number of country artists in Austin this week for the annual SXSW Music Festival. Both Willie Nelson and George Strait made surprise appearances earlier in the week, while Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Wynonna Judd and the Big Noise, Drake White, Levi Hummon, Brett Young, Ashley Campbell, Midland, Delta Rae and Sam Outlaw also have gigs lined up for the festival.
