Loretta Lynn brought her iconic songs and personal stories to SiriusXM listeners at a recent taping of a special Christmas show for the radio network.

Singer-songwriter Shawn Camp joined the 83-year-old country legend for the special taping, which took place at her ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., in front of an intimate audience of SiriusXM subscribers who had won tickets through a contest. The excitement in the room was palpable as the iconic singer entered, accompanied by her daughter Patsy, who introduced her to the crowd and was on hand to help her throughout the show.

Elizabeth Cook hosted the spot, which consisted of Lynn and Camp sharing stories from Lynn’s latest album, White Christmas Blue, released in October. It’s her first Christmas album in 50 years, and she and Camp also performed the title song, as well as “County Christmas” and “To Heck With Ole Santa Claus.”

The latter song was inspired by Lynn’s sometimes-troubled but long-lasting marriage, which has become almost as much a part of her legend as her music. She wrote the humorous track one not-particularly-merry Christmas after finding out that her husband had given another woman lingerie as a present.

Lynn revealed that her first Christmas album was inspired by the death of her close friend Patsy Cline, for whom her daughter is named.

“They don’t want you to do a Christmas album or a religious album,” she recalled. “When I lost Patsy, I went in and talked to my producer, Owen Bradley. I said, ‘Owen, I want to do a religious album.’

“And he said, ‘Now, I know how you’re feeling, ’cause of Patsy.’ And he says, ‘You need to think what we need to do next.'”

In the end, they went forward with a Christmas album, 1966’s Country Christmas, which ended up as a success. The album debuted both its title song and “To Heck With Ole Santa Claus,” which Lynn also included on White Christmas Blue.

Though Lynn revealed she was recovering from a fall at home that injured her foot and ribs, she was in good voice and high spirits, displaying the same quick wit and humor that has always been her trademark. After she flubbed the lyrics to one song, she observed, “I’m 83 years old … I can sing what I want!” as the audience laughed along with her. She led the thrilled crowd in singalongs of several of the songs, with Cook also jumping in to sing harmony, and fielded question from the awestruck fans.

Lynn also shared stories about her many famous friends, including June Carter Cash and Willie Nelson, whom she met when they were new to Nashville. He had written iconic hits including “Hello Walls” and “Crazy,” but had yet to break through as an artist when she first met him.

“Willie, back in them days he wore suits. Beautiful suits. His hair and his eyes were the same color!”

Lynn’s full interview and performance is scheduled to debut on Friday (Dec. 16) at 6PM ET on Willie Nelson’s SiriusXM channel, Willie’s Roadhouse (channel 59) and through the SiriusXM app on smartphones and other devices, as well as online at siriusxm.com. It will also air on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country (channel 60) on Saturday (Dec. 17) at 5PM ET. The program will replay on both channels, along with the Country Christmas (channel 58) throughout the holidays.
