Yes, it's true -- the sweet Lucy Hale auditioned for the role of Anastasia Steele in the upcoming film version of '50 Shades of Grey.'

Hale opens up to MTV about the audition process for the steamy movie, admitting it was "awkward" (you don't say!). Dakota Johnson ended up with the role, but if she hadn't, fans would have seen Hale bust out a little sexy on the big screen.

“It was like a two-page monologue of dialogue of exactly what you would think it would be. Very uncomfortable,” the country singer and TV star explains. “But it was sorta one of those things where you just had to go for it otherwise you’re gonna look lame -- I hope I didn’t look lame.”

While it's probable she looked anything but lame, Hale dishes there's one person in her life she wouldn't have wanted to see her in the role: her grandma.

“It was unlike any other audition I had ever done before in my life," the singer says. "Let’s just say I don’t want my grandmother watching this audition tape..."

The actress-turned-country-star admits that the role would have been completely opposite of her role as Aria Montgomery on ABC Family's 'Pretty Little Liars.' "I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it,” Hale shares. “Mainly, I was just interested in doing something risky, and doing something a little different than my character on ‘PLL,’ so yeah, it took me out of my comfort zone."

Perhaps she can find a spot in a future adaptation.
