A public memorial service for Mel McDaniel will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 2-4PM at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. On March 31, McDaniel died from lung cancer at age 68 at his home in Hendersonville, Tenn.

The 'Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On' singer was a member of the Opry since 1986. His last time on the Opry stage was on Sept. 28, 2010 for the re-opening of the institution after last year's devastating floods.

The son of a truck driving father, McDaniel was born in Checotah, Okla. At age 14, the country legend taught himself the guitar chords to 'Frankie and Johnny' for his high school talent contest, and the rest was history: a wonderful 54-year musical legacy. He was not only an Opry star; in 2006, McDaniel was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

McDaniel is survived by one daughter and one grandson. His family requests memorial donations be made to:
