Merle Haggard‘s entry on the Top 100 Country Love Songs list comes from late in his career. His 1985 chart-topper is a thank you note of sorts to a woman who has stood with him through good times and bad. One struggles to think of a better song for a longtime couple’s wedding anniversary.
“You gave your hand to me that day / And you did it, because you’re made that way / And you put me on a natural high / And I can fly, I can fly,” Haggard sings, summoning a smoother voice than fans usually associate with the ‘Okie From Muskogee’ singer. The great Janie Fricke added background vocals to this legendary song.
