Merle Haggard's most famous song rises to No. 23 on the Top 100 Country Songs list because even after 40-plus years, the award-winning hit is still referenced and enjoyed in pop culture. Most nods are paradoxical or satirical in nature, but the Hag never intended for the song to be taken literally in the first place.

However, 'Okie From Muskogee' did become an anthem for the straight-laced, conservative American in the late '60s and early '70s, and would later become one the hippies would sing along to. Great country music unites, which in the end, this song does.
