Mockingbird Sun, ‘Lucky Guy’ – Song Review

Mockingbird Sun
Mailboat Records

Texas trio Mockingbird Sun make a habit of not taking themselves too seriously. One gets that impression quickly upon perusing their website. It features the usual news/tour/biography fodder, but also videos of games like the Walmart Olympics.

That sense of joyous humility runs into the debut song from their debut EP, both available now at iTunes. ‘Lucky Guy’ is about a guy who realizes he’s outkicked his coverage, or landed a girl beyond his wildest dreams.

“I drive a run a rundown Chevy / Got a lottery ticket that never pays off / I ain’t rich but I’m ready / To give her everything, oh God I hope it’s enough / She loves me / I don’t ask why / Guess I’m a lucky guy.” Lead singer Charlie Berry sings this chorus, with bandmates Brett Taylor and Matthew “Truck” Roley offering flawless harmonies.

Sure, this story has been told before, and these three don’t mess around with colors or images that can’t be found in the small box of Crayola, but their honest, “lucky to be here” approach to music and their career is refreshing. One senses they’d be easy to hang out and sip beers with, with lines like this: “I keep it simple / I’m nothing special / She’s the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen / She could have had her / Pick of the litter / She’s got no business runnin’ round with me.”

It’s Texas country in the spirit of Pat Green, Jack Ingram and now the Eli Young Band, a blend of traditional country and alt-rock that’s easy to overlook. Here’s to hoping fans and radio don’t brush aside these talented musicians.
