Up-and-coming quintet Old Dominion released their first-ever major label music video for their latest single “Break Up with Him” off their yet-to-be-released debut full-length album, and it’s got a theme you just may recognize.

Dressed in garb suited for a sock hop in the ‘50s, the band performs in front of streamers on stage at a school dance in the gymnasium as lead singer Matthew Ramsey attempts to charm the leading lady away from the quintessential jerky high school jock. The band say the throwback aesthetic was inspired by the movie Back to the Future.

“We came up with the idea for the Back to the Future video when we had a long ride from West Virginia all the way to San Francisco,” Ramsey tells Country Weekly. “It was a long radio tour trip, and on our stops we knew we had a video coming up and we wanted to talk about it, so we were sitting by the pool coming up with all these crazy ideas, and somebody said something like, ‘I don’t know if people are gonna get that,’ and one guy goes, ‘Your kids are gonna love it.’ Which is a catchphrase from the movie, and that just sparked us down this road.”

The fun storytelling in the video meshes well with the laid back, humorous tune and the band’s quirky style, leaving a memorable impression on viewers, particularly when the Ramsey from the future (in this case, the ‘80s) jumps on stage clad in a puffy vest and denim jacket Marty McFly would be proud of. Spoiler Alert: the good guy gets the girl and rides off into the sunset in a certain time-traveling vehicle. Well, sort of.

Old Dominion is made up of several songwriters in their own right, with Ramsey and guitarists Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi having individually written for artists like Dierks Bentley, the Band Perry, Kenny Chesney and Tyler Farr. The group's debut EP dropped last fall, earning them a slot opening for Chesney’s The Big Revival tour.
