There are plenty of artists who have gone from pop to country, or country to rock, but there aren’t many who have successfully transitioned from jazz to country. That is, until Puss n Boots.
Comprised of nine-time Grammy winner Norah Jones, jazz singer-songwriter Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper, former bass guitarist and backing vocalist for Ryan Adams & the Cardinals and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, the trio share the story behind their unique name and convergence together as a band.
Jones explains, “This band started about eight years ago. And she [Dobson] booked a gig at a pool hall, and we played there every week until we could get through all the songs,” says, laughing and adding that it “took about a year,” as the group dissolves into giggles.
The three artists who made names for themselves solo continued to combine their trio of musical talent. “Mostly, it was about us getting together and playing when everyone was in town … a way to do something different from what we were all doing on our own and just have fun,” says Dobson.
Their fun began to pay off. Jones recalls the moment they decide to record an album — dubbed ‘No Fools, No Fun’ — officially released Tuesday (July 15).
“… We listened to the live recording and we thought, ‘Wow, we’ve been playing for a long time; we kinda sound like a band, we have our own thing now. And it just felt like it was time to make a record,” says Jones. Their album includes 12 original tracks and two covers (including a rendition of one of Johnny Cash‘s hits).
For those surprised of Jones’ move from ultra smooth jazz hits to Americana country music, the songstress says she just feels “so at home singing country music.”
In this exclusive interview, PnB also share how their admittedly cheeky name came into being — let’s just say it didn’t take a whole lot of brainstorming on their part. With three beautiful ladies, one exciting new album, great stage presence and a massive amount of talent, this trio is taking on country music and walking toward their dreams — with boots on!
