Rayvon Owen took on a country classic on Wednesday night's (April 15) episode of American Idol. Although the choice was unexpected, Owen performed an incredible rendition of "Always on My Mind."

Owen took the stage to perform the Willie Nelson tune and left the audience breathless from his very first note. His stage presence was calm, cool and collected while he sang a slowed down version of the song. All eyes (and ears) were on the 23-year-old's smooth voice, while he started singing with just a piano.

It didn't take long before Jennifer Lopez showed her approval of his song choice. She bobbed her head slowly, while Keith Urban took a few notes and lip synched along to the lyrics. It wasn't as obvious whether he was impressed with Owen's performance or not. At the end of the song, Owen added a few vocal inflections to really show the judges his wide range. He concluded with a tip of his head while the audience cheered loudly.

Scott Borchetta, the Big Machine Label Group founder and current Idol mentor, chatted with Taste of Country before the big performance. He said the song choice was definitely unexpected for Owen — especially if his other performances and song choices were taken into account. That's not the only American classic song that Owen will perform on the reality show stage. He's also going to prove his worth with the Doobie Brothers‘ “Long Train Runnin'."

Owen hasn't had it easy the last couple of weeks. He's needed to resort to Twitter saves for the last two weeks while on the show. Watch the entire clip of "Always on My Mind" by Owen above.
