Reba McEntire Chooses Stories Over Reality Television

Reba McEntire appreciates a good story, whether it’s in a song or on television. However, in a recent interview with Big Machine Label Group, the country music icon noted she’s not a big fan of reality TV.

“I like stories. I love stories,” McEntire says. “I don’t really like reality TV at all. I think the only thing I like reality-wise are the music shows like The Voice, American Idol, something like that. But I like stories. I like The Crown. I absolutely love Outlander, absolutely love because it’s historic fiction. Of course The Crown is not but it’s history and you learn something from it.”

It’s doubtful McEntire is dedicating too much time to watching any kind of television shows right now, as she is hard at work promoting her new duet version of her song “Back to God” with contemporary Christian star Lauren Daigle.

Co-written by Randy Houser and Dallas Davidson, “Back to God” was originally released on Houser’s 2008 album Anything Goes. McEntire re-cut the song for her double-disc gospel record, Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope, and launched it as the album’s first single in January of 2017.

She then paired with Daigle to sing “Back to God” at the 2017 ACM Awards in Las Vegas on April 2, launching yet another version — and giving another life to the song.

McEntire is also plotting her own return to television. She stars as Sheriff Ruby Adair in a new drama titled Red Blooded, and the character stretches her acting chops well beyond her comedic previous television efforts.

“I’m a dark character. I’ve got a lot of flaws and demons, and I’m having a lot of problems in my personal life,” she says. “My town is being disrupted and I’m having to deal with it all. I’m under a lot of stress.”
