Reese Witherspoon is taking a stand over the lack of fair female representation in the country music industry by sharing her thoughts on the subject on her Twitter account.

Witherspoon turned to Twitter on April 8 to write, “Let’s fix this y’all! Women are severely underrepresented on the country radio.” Witherspoon goes on to highlight the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which focuses on studying diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. She continues, “Shout out to the @Inclusionists for tackling inequality in entertainment through research and projects.”

Witherspoon cited an article from the Washington Post about the 2019 ACM Awards and how it took almost three-quarters of the way into the show for a female to win an award. Kacey Musgraves won both Album of the Year and Female of the Year, while songwriter Nicolle Galyon won Song of the Year for co-writing “Tequila” by Dan + Shay.

The article also includes eye-opening statistics about the country music industry — particularly radio — with the year-end lists having one female artist for every 5.2 male artists.

Witherspoon also tweeted out, “Need to see more inclusion for women on country radio!” accompanied by a link to the Time’s Up initiative, which states the fact that only 16 percent of artists from the top 500 country songs from 2014 to 2018 were female.

This isn't the first time Reese has shone a light on females in country music. In 2018 she started a video series, Shine On With Reese, where she shared female success stories. Witherspoon went to Nashville and had Kacey Musgraves on the show to speak about what her experience has been as a female in the industry.

Witherspoon has a connection to music by previously playing June Carter Cash in the 2005 film Walk the Line, for which she won both a Golden Globe awards and a Screen Actors Guild award.
