Sammi Smith only scored two Top 10 solo country singles, but created a legacy with her 1970 classic No. 1 single, 'Help Me Make It Through the Night.' Often credited as one of the few females associated with the country outlaw movement of the '70s, Smith went Top 10 on the mainstream pop chart with this country ballad.

Written by the legendary Kris Kristofferson, our No. 43 entry on the Top 100 Country Songs countdown was inspired by a rather unlikely music icon. The songwriter crafted the tune after hearing pop crooner Frank Sinatra tell Esquire magazine, "Booze, broads, or a bible -- whatever helps me make it through the night," referring to the singer's belief system. The song earned Smith a Grammy Award.
