One of the men who robbed singer Scotty McCreery and several of his friends at gunpoint has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to several crimes stemming from the incident.

Mikkail Jamal Shaw, 21, pleaded guilty on Monday (June 27) to three counts of second-degree kidnapping, three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of burglary and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery. Shaw was arrested just days after the robbery, which took place in May of 2014 at an apartment in Raleigh, N.C., near where McCreery was attending college.

The singer was visiting with a group of friends at an apartment around 2AM when one of them answered a knock at the door, whereupon several men burst into the room armed with guns and held the friends hostage at gunpoint while they stole wallets, cell phones and a laptop. One of the robbers held a pistol to McCreery's head.

“This is real and raw, and I’m thinking I’m going to die any second,” McCreery recalls in his recently-released book, Go Big or Go Home.

Shaw refused to identify his accomplices in the crime. According to WRAL in Raleigh, he was sentenced to a minimum of 204 months in prison, and the remaining offenses were consolidated.

McCreery did not have to testify, but he and other victims were in court on Tuesday (June 28) as the sentence was read. Shaw's grandfather raised him for the last 19 years, and he addressed the courtroom, saying his grandson was a good person who got involved with the wrong people and made a bad decision.

"I know my grandson very well," he said. "He's not a leader. He's a follower."

Shaw will also have to participate in mental health counseling and vocational training during his incarceration.
