Remarkable St. Jude Teen Takes on Balance Beam With a Prosthetic Leg

Kate’s beam routine at the 2016 Bravo Classic.

To get up on a balance beam and proceed to do flips, tricks and twirls takes skill, determination and courage. But doing it on a prosthetic leg? That takes a St. Jude kid like Kate Foster.

The girl, a Rockford, Illinois, native, has a deep passion for gymnastics, and she wasn’t going to let cancer — which caused the amputation of one of her legs — stand in the way of her dreams. Kate’s mother posted an inspiring video of her daughter performing a beam routine at a competition earlier this year, and once you watch the whole thing, you’ll see why it went viral.

Kate first shared her story with the Q98.5 St. Jude Kids Radiothon four years ago, and this year she returned to share some good news.

“I’m in remission, for three years now,” she says. “I was there for about three or four months. One month in the hospital then the rest of the time at their target house, their off campus housing for patients … then I got to go home!”

Right after her homecoming is when Kate met up with Q98.5 and became a spokesperson for St. Jude. You can hear her story set to music in Dierks Bentley’s song “Riser” during radiothons all across the country, and soon Kate will appear on Good Morning America to share her courageous battle with viewers across the nation.

On March 3 and 4, Taste of Country will join 15 Townsquare Media stations in support of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This two-day web and radiothon aims to raise money and awareness for the world class research and treatment facility in Memphis, Tenn. Now in its third year, this collaborative effort has raised nearly $2.5 million. Country radio has helped raise more than $550 million during 26 years worth of Country Cares radiothons. The mission is simple: raise money, save lives.
