The final season of CMT's Nashville is apparently going to keep viewers on their toes with plenty of interesting twists and turns. One of them is a truly unexpected surprise: Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle is set to guest-star as himself in an upcoming Season 6 episode.

According to TV Line, the series' star Sam Palladio, who plays Gunnar Scott, explained that Earle appears to help his character get over a stubborn case of songwriter's block as he's trying to get back into gear. The struggling character turns to Earle, who “encourages him to stop overthinking and to just jump off that cliff and go for it and do something that people have never seen you do before," Palladio told TV Line.

Earle is no stranger to the small screen, and has a resume of acting chops under his belt. His recurring roles include The Wire's Walon and Treme's Harley Watt, as well as appearances on Law & Order: SVU and 30 Rock.

The Nashville cast and crew will wrap work on the series this month. New episodes resume June 7, and the series finale will air July 26.
