When Alabama rolled onto the scene, there were very few bands in country music that had commercial success. Up until this time, country music had only accepted vocal groups like the Statler Brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys. In retrospect, Alabama did for bands what Kitty Wells did for female singers in the ‘50s -- they broke the barrier and paved the way for more bands.

Alabama to Receive Greatest Hits Honor at 2011 American Country Awards

Alabama have sold more show tickets and had more No.1 singles (43) than any other band in the history of country music. In their 30-year career they've had 21 gold, platinum or multi-platinum records and sold more than 73 million copies of those records. Brad Paisley, ‘Old Alabama’ – Lyrics Uncovered

Convincing Alabama to play on Brad Paisley's song 'Old Alabama' was the easy part. Writing the eventual chart topper proved to be much more difficult. Paisley tells Taste of Country the song began to take shape long before he invited the country legends to join him. "We were not really writing it the right way at the time," he says of the initial lyric-writing efforts. "When we turned it into this story about a girl who likes that old music, and then realized that the best way to really cap it off was to have them appear on it -- almost like sampling one of their old songs -- that’s when it became really unique."
