Eric Paslay

Eric Paslay has parlayed his reputation as a highly-respected Nashville songwriter into a career as one of the most promising newer artists in country music. The Texas native started playing guitar at age 15, and moved to Tennessee to study at Middle Tennessee State University, where he graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He first made a name for himself in Nashville's music scene as a hit songwriter, writing songs including Jake Owen's "Barefoot Blue Jean Night," "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" for Eli Young Band and Love and Theft's "Angel Eyes," and has also written for Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts. Paslay signed with EMI in Nashville in 2011 and released his self-titled debut album in 2014. He scored hits with "Friday Night," "Song About a Girl" and "She Don't Love You," and in 2015 he joined Dierks Bentley in guest appearances on Charles Kelley's debut solo single, "The Driver," which earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. In October 2015 Paslay released "High Class," the lead single from his upcoming second solo album, 'Dressed in Black.'

Backstage at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday night (Sept. 23), one saw the usual: a new artist -- in this case, Tae from Maddie & Tae -- wringing her hands as she prepared to make a debut, a slightly less new artist posing for a picture with a legend -- in this case Eric Paslay with Alabama's Randy Owen -- and the shuffling of talent to the circle and back for 10 to 15 minute mini-sets. Yet there was a different energy for this performance at country music's most well-known venue.

Fans covered Hunter Mountain like snow in December during Dierks Bentley's set at the Taste of Country Music Festival in Hunter, N.Y. on Friday night. The singer was the last of five singers to take the stage, and was forced to follow a powerful show from Brantley Gilbert. He handled the pressure well.
